Hard to get backing for diverse films, director says: Gurinder Chadha

Gurinder Chadha is one of the prominent British film directors and producers through whose work the
authenticity of the life of South Asians in the UK was urged.
Director Gurinder Chadha says she had hoped films like Bend it Like Beckham might help diversify the industry.
For me, it’s sad that if you have people of colour as the lead in a movie, it automatically becomes less
commercial as far as financiers are concerned,” says film director Gurinder Chadha.
The director of the box oce hit Bend It Like Beckham in 2002 says being London-based has become a problem in trying to secure funding for her new movies.
Christmas Karma, written in the style of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, stars Big Bang Theory actor Kunal Nayyar as Scrooge – and he’s a London-born Indian.
Chadha, a graduate of Brunel University in Uxbridge, west London, said that the industry would “never move the
dial” if investors did not back a more diverse range of films.
But the woman claimed that despite success, investors didn’t have enough confidence in order to support her.
She hopes people will “feel di erently” after her film Christmas Karma, which is slated for release next year
